Report: Roberts puts Royals third

Reading 1 (Roberts 12)
Burnley 0

A first half goal from Jason Roberts put Reading up to third in the table as they saw off Burnley 1-0 at Madejski Stadium.

It was another impressively efficient and professional display from Brian McDermott men, who are on a superb run of form.

We had two efforts cleared off the line, and Burnley hit the post twice in a game that always required your attention - but again Reading came out on top.

Starting XI team news:
Reading made one change, Jobi McAnuff coming in for Hal Robson-Kanu. Simon Church has an ankle injury so misses out, while Tomasz Cywka was back involved. There was no room for Joseph Mills.

First half:
It was Burnley who had the first real chance, and with seven minutes on the clock an excellent left wing cross found Charlie Austin in real space in the middle, but his header flew back off the crossbar.

But it was Reading who took the lead with only 12 minutes gone. Jobi McAnuff did well down the left and cut it back to Jason Roberts, who had found a good position in the box and swung his left foot to loop it over to the Burnley 'keeper for 1-0.

Jimmy Kebe was looking very lively down the right, and midway through the half he went on a superb run from deep in his own half, getting the east stand on their feet to a chorus of 'we're only here for the Kebe.'

Burnley were also lively out wide, and a long range Jay Rodriguez effort was seen wide by Adam Federici.

Noel Hunt was very close to making it 2-0 right on half time, but was denied by an in. Incredible and brave Ben Mee block when Lee Grant spilled an Ian Harte free kick. Mee was lying prone on the floor, and somehow blocked Hunt's show with his head. Superb defending.

Second half:
Federici made a very important stop at the start of the second half, out smartly at a striker's feet as he went through on goal from the edge of the area.

Then Burnley's Rodriguez was perhaps fortunate not to be sent off as he lunged in on Mikele Leigertwood, only a yellow was shown.

Rodriguez was heavily involved, and Burnley hit the woodwork for the second time as his powerful header flow back off the upright from a corner.

Kaspars Gorkss and Dean Marney were then both booked after a scramble in the Burnley box - it looked very surprising indeed. Burnley sub Martin Paterson then hit a decent drive from range but it was easily seen over.

Sub Adam Le Fondre had half a sight of goal within moments of coming on, and may have gone down for a penalty but his effort was easily gathered.

Five minutes of additional time were signalled - and Rodriguez sidefooted wide from the edge amid a crowd of bodies.

Hunt spurned a breakaway chance in the dying embers - but it was of no concern as we moved to third in the table.
