It’s official – we’ll meet Huddersfield Town in the final of the Sky Bet Championship play-offs at Wembley Stadium on Monday 29th May, 3pm.
That’s because the Terriers defeated Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Wednesday evening – and that match had all the drama that the play-offs are known for!
A relatively uneventful meeting at the John Smith’s Stadium ended goalless on Sunday, sending the teams into the second leg on an even keel. In the return meeting Steven Fletcher’s header in the second half in Sheffield had the Owls ahead, but sub Collin Quaner sent in a low cross to force an own-goal from Tom Lees as Nakhi Wells lurked in the area. It ended all square after 90 minutes.
The goalkeepers were called into action in an energy-sapping period of extra time, but weren’t beaten. And so after three and a half hours of football, penalties were needed to separate the sides.
Sam Hutchinson and Jack Payne each had spot-kicks saved, but Danny Ward was the hero as the Terriers stopper kept out a must-score effort from Fernando Forestieri to book the Terriers’ place as our opponents, following our win over Fulham on Tuesday evening.
We’ve won one and lost one against David Wagner’s men this season – and in our third meeting, it’s winner takes all. Only one can take a place in the Premier League next year.
The first selling period for tickets begins on Thursday morning at 9am, when Current Full & Half 2016/17 Season Ticket Holders and new 2017/18 Season Ticket Holders will be able to buy (2 per person), as well as Member Card Holders with a minimum of 750 Royalty Points (1 per person).
