Mandy Van den Berg secures away win over Yeovil
Reading FC Women picked up their second win of the FA WSL Spring Series after dominating in Taunton against newly-promoted Yeovil Town.
Kelly Chambers’ side controlled large spells of the game, but could only convert one of a dozen chances in the first-half. But one goal was all it took to secure victory.
Dutch star Mandy Van Den Berg scrambled the ball over the Yeovil line following a Jo Potter corner to score her first goal for the club.
Fellow centre-back Kirsty McGee perhaps should have doubled the Royals lead; her header was just wide following Anna Green’s cross in the 21st minute.
Yeovil goalkeeper Megan Walsh put in a fine performance between the posts - her penalty area was peppered with crosses after both Becky Jane and Anna Green earned a lot of success down the channels.
And the Royals kept on pushing for a second after the break - forwards Melissa Fletcher and Anissa Lahmari were both introduced as Yeovil legs tired. But the Glovers defended well and the Royals failed to convert the chances they carved out.
Strong penalty appeals were waved away by the referee after Kirsty Linnett was brought down in the box, but it didn't matter. Reading had picked up maximum points on the road.
"We wanted to come and make sure we picked up the points, but it’s still frustrating - we should have put the game to bed in the first half and we need to be more clinical in front of goal," said manager Kelly Chambers after the game.
"It was important that we kept a clean sheet, our first of the Spring Series, and we’ve come away with three points so, yes, I’m happy!”
