Manager plots healthy January position

Manager Nigel Adkins has mapped out his hopes for 2013/14 and believe it is very important that the Royals are in a good position when January comes around.

"For me, it’s about making sure we stay in the race come January," Adkins said after the end of the season.

"From January on, you get through the window, which affects a lot of players about are whether. they coming or going. Then from February onwards, it’s a question of whether you can go and win the race. That’s how we go and navigate it through.

“If you can get a consistency about yourself, because sometimes things go astray that you can’t control, if you get your principles and standards right you give yourself a chance to be there or thereabouts.
“We also look for a periodised training programme which means you get fitter as the season goes on.

“I want to be back in the Premier League, this club won the Championship and we have to have a desire and belief that we can do it again.”

The manager has already made his first acquisition in left back Wayne Bridge, and says that arrivals and departures are inevitable at every club - with next season in mind.

"It’s a period when you can bring players in, and some will move on, that always happens," the manager explained.

"We report back on the 27th of June, some of the lads have been away on international duty too so it’s a quick turnaround. We’ll have to monitor them as they come back. For me there’s a feelgood factor and we’re looking forward to it.

"It’s important you have a natural break to let your body adjust to the trauma of playing professional sport every single day. Your body does need a recovery process and we’ll allow that to happen.

"It’s a first pre-season under myself and Andy so we’d like to think the players will enjoy it. There’ll be lots of football done, although we don’t need to play loads of games.

"We’ll make sure we arrive at the first game of the season where we want to be physically, technically, tactically and mentally in preparation for a long campaign."
