Former Greek international Yannis Anastasiou has joined the club’s First Team coaching set-up until at least the end of the season.
Yannis enjoyed a top class playing career, making over 400 appearances as a forward for clubs such as Anderlecht, Ajax and Sparta Rotterdam – earning five caps for his country in the process.
After completing his coaching qualifications in England with the Football Association, Anastasiou joined Panathinaikos in 2008 – working as the assistant to manager Henk Ten Cate during the club’s Champions League campaigns.
He went on to work with Ajax – coaching the club’s youth and reserve teams for two years before completing his UEFA Pro License in June 2012 when he also met License graduate Brian McDermott.
Over the last few months the 39-year-old has broadened his coaching portfolio across Europe – enjoying spells with clubs such as Paris Saint- Germain and Barcelona, under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.
Manager Brian McDermott told readingfc.co.uk, “Yannis is joining our coaching team and brings great experience, he had a fantastic playing career as well as being coach at a number of top sides across Europe.
“We first met at a Pro License course and he is a good guy, he speaks five languages and is a very positive character to have around the place. He will be able to work on individual aspects with players, he’s here until the end of the season in the first instance and will add to the staff we already have.”
Yannis added, “I’m delighted to come and join Reading to work with Brian and all the excellent staff. It’s a pleasure to work with Gibbo, Sal, Karl, the analysis team - everyone. Everything here is great and it’s a nice environment for someone to work in, a great environment to improve yourself and get better.
“I met Brian for the first time when we completed our qualifications – and despite his success at Reading he was very humble and very calm. I like him as a person and the atmosphere, mentality and attitude at the club is fantastic.”
