Owner Anton Zingarevich is happy to have added Pavel Pogrebnyak to the Royals' squad over the summer, and reaffirmed that nationality played no part in our move for the striker.
Simply, Pogrebnyak is a player that Brian McDermott has known about and admired for many years.
Anton told Reading FC Player earlier this summer, "He is a player Brian wanted for some time, at the end of last season we started talking about it.
"It wasn't anything to do with nationality, it was all about the qualities he had which fitted in with the Reading way. You can see that in the way he trains and the attributes he has in his game.
"Brian really wanted to bring him in and it was a difficult deal to do but we convinced Pavel that he will have a bright future here."
With the addition of Pavel, plus Guthrie, McCleary, Gunter, Shorey and Mariappa, it has been a busy summer and also one in which business has been done very early.
Anton said, "I discussed it with Brian that the key was to get everybody in before the trip to Portugal and we managed to achieve that. We have added quality to our squad, we already had a good group but we have added a little extra to strengthen it. There is healthy competition within the squad now so we are in a good position."
Looking ahead to our Barclays Premier League campaign, Anton said, "We just need to get established and we just need to be there now and to start playing. This club has a bright future, I see areas where we can grow, so as long as we are doing well and continue like we have done then everything will be fine."
