Brian McDermott says he has personally watched highly-rated Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas in action but regrets that it will be very difficult for any club to capture the signing of in the January transfer window.
After being quizzed on recent reports linking the forward with the Royals, the manager admitted that the player was someone the club had been watching closely - but told journalists that a deal for the forward was unlikely.
“I’d be really surprised if Aspas goes out in this window. He’s been a Celta Vigo player since he was a young boy and they’re in a position where they’re not great in the league, so I’d be really surprised if anyone was able to do that deal,” said Brian.
“It’s an expensive deal – I think that would be a difficult deal for anyone to do. Steve Head (Head of Scouting and Recruitment) knows him well, I’ve seen him play – the scouts have seen him play. He’s had a couple of really good seasons – this season he’s scored some goals in the Spanish Premier League, but I would say that’s a very, very difficult deal to do. Celta Vigo is a big, big club and I can’t see that happening to be honest.”
McDermott was also asked about a potential move for West Brom midfielder Graham Dorrans, but said that an approach for the Scotsman was not on the cards.
