Royals faced fight to capture Carrico

Brian McDermott has spoken for the first time on his capture of Sporting Lisbon captain Daniel Carrico.

The Royals’ boss revealed that the 24-year-old turned down interest from around Europe to sign for Reading – and Brian believes that Carrico has the character to fit in at Madejski Stadium.

“He’s a really good person. He was captain of the side at Sporting Lisbon, there was a lot of interest in Europe for him and I know the two big clubs in Portgual were looking to sign him,” said McDermott.

“But, we’ve done the deal and we’re happy to be bringing him in. Obviously the fact he was captain tells you something about him as a person.”

McDermott also spoke highly of the former Portugese under 21 international’s versatility - whilst acknowledging that he would like to strengthen his squad further in the coming weeks.

“He can play in a number of positions, central midfield, centre back and full back. He’ll mainly compete for a midfield position I would think. He can pass it, he can play and he’s a tough boy. Most importantly he wants to play for us and in the Barclays Premier League.

"He’ll come in on Thursday, I don’t know about when he can play, we’ll assess him in training and go from there. We want two or maybe three players plus Daniel. We’ll see, you know what January is like.
I don’t think the big clubs will do much in this window, some clubs will but you have to be careful in January. For clubs like us, players need to have the right ethos, spirit and desire, especially in our situation. Daniel fits that bill."
