Royals boss Brian McDermott spoke to the press about a wide range of subjects after our thrilling draw with Chelsea, including Adam Le Fondre's England prospects and the chances of players leaving - we've got full details here.
Brian on Le Fondre
We’ve got faith in this group, we’ve got desire, and we’ve got Adam Le Fondre. He’s a bit special. To come off the bench and pick up the speed of the game as fast as he did, and those two finishes were from the top drawer. I’ll be watching the second goal 20 times!
Of course I would start with him if it was right. I’m just trying to find a way to get results, the best solutions. We’ve got results so he’s happy, the boys are happy and every single player is delighted. I speak to Adam as much as I can and it’s not easy picking a side. I agonise over it and just do the best I can to get a result. He’s just a great bloke, he’s funny, he trains every day like he wants to be the best player in training, he really is a genuinely good guy and getting better all the time.
It’s been a really good month, we got into the last 16 of the FA Cup against Manchester United, we’ve got results and we look forward to another home game on Saturday.
Brian on ALF's England chances.
Well, you tell me what his chances are. I just hope Ray [Lewington, England assistant] didn’t leave at 2-0! I’ll give him a ring and make sure, he probably thinks we lost 2-0! It was a masterclass of finishing. I spoke to Adam when he joined us and said England has to be something you look at it. That’s his goal, he’s one of the top English goalscorers and it’ll be interesting to see. And I’m not selling him! We did his contract recently and I am very, very glad we did!
Brian on Blackman
He’s another player with desire. He was at Blackburn as a youngster and we think he’s got a good future here. We’re trying to sign players with the same hunger and desire that we’ve had for many years. He’s scored a lot of goals this season, did well on loan in Scotland, he wants to be the best he possibly can.
Brian on new signings
There’s possibly one, it’s 50/50, maybe a little bit against.
Brian on Thomas Ince
Thomas Ince won’t be coming here. We tried to get him but Blackpool have been very strong and I think he’ll be staying at Blackpool. He’s a wonderful talent.
Brian on Hope Akpan
He came on against Chelsea at 21 years old, just out of Crawley. If he’s worked with David Moyes then he has worked with a top manager. He did terrifically well. We paid £300K for him - you wouldn't sign him for £300K now!
Brian on players leaving
I don’t know, we’ll see what deadline day brings. We’ve had a few phone calls for one or two of ours.
Brian on our type of signings
We sign the person first and foremost. The desire, heart, they have to have all of that and then their quality on the pitch. These players give us everything.
