Royals boss Brian McDermott has employed a 4-4-1-1 formation in our last two games, and has reaffirmed his view that players are the most important aspect of a team shape.
McDermott has built up a great tactical nous in his 35+ years in the game, and while he has employed a number of different shapes in his time as Reading boss, he insists that the 11 players and how they work are the key factors.
He said, "If you look back, when I first got the job I played 4-3-3 a lot, Gylfi as number 10 and Shane up front. We played some fantastic football, Jimmy and Jobi wide.
"We've changed it in the last couple of games and I just think in the Barclays Premier League, if you go to Chelsea and play 4-4-2 you can get out numbered in midfield.
"I thought the system worked well at Chelsea, and against Peterborough it worked well with the ball, we could have been better without it. But most of all, it's about players."
