More on January window

Brian McDermott gave an update on a number of players recently linked with the Royals during his Hogwood Park press conference this week.

When asked about Zambian international defender Stopilla Sunzu…
“He was here as a kid. We thought we might have a look at him recently, but he’s involved in the African Cup of Nations and there were a lot of games, so there wasn’t a chance to do that. Whether or not we bring him in to have a look, time will tell.

When asked about Australian under 20 international Tom Rogic…
“We know Tommy Rogic really well, we tried to get him in last season – he’s a good young player, only 20 years of age. We’ve talked to him and it’s something we are working on but it’s not done yet, it’s not far from it. We’ve got to speak to Tom, he’s got to speak to us and we’ll see.

“If we do agree and he does come we’ve then got to get a work permit, which is not a ‘gimme’. But he’s played a few games now, he’s getting himself into the Australian national side. We got turned down on appeal last time but if it goes that far again, we have good video coverage to give to the panel and people would be able to see that for the appeal.”

When asked about Swansea striker Danny Graham…
“He is Swansea’s player. I think there’s a bit of interest [generally] in Danny Graham. He’s scored a couple of goals lately as well, he’s scored in the league, what can I say. Not a lot on that really.

“We all know him. I’ve known him since he was at Carlisle, Middlesbrough before that. He’s another one who has developed over time. But he’s not our player, it’s nothing to do with us.”

Brian also confirmed that Millwall have made an enquiry about Simon Church – and that Director of Football Nick Hammond was handling the matter.

McDermott went on to confirm that he still hoped to be active in the transfer window throughout January.

“That specific player, the ones that know the level – that would be the ones that we would try to find. That hasn’t changed, if we can get those kind of players – only time will tell,” he said.

“I think it’s just important to freshen everyone up. If we can bring in a couple of faces to freshen up and help the group then we’ll be pleased with that. When you’re in football you try to go everywhere to find players. We’ve done that in the past, it’s the only way you can survive you have to have a good scouting network. Steve Head and Nicky Hammond have done an awful lot of work.”
