The Royals will be without Jason Roberts for this Saturday’s clash with West Bromwich Albion, though Brian McDermott did confirm that there was some more positive news regarding goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
Roberts has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hip injury, whilst McCarthy is progressing well from his long term shoulder problem.
“Alex is coming on really well. We’re hopeful that it’s not going to be as long as we first thought,” said Brian.
“We don’t know how long, I hate putting time frames on things. But having spoken to our physios, we’re very hopeful he won’t be out for the season. We’ve got three really good goalkeepers here, and we’ve got Alex as well coming back so we think we’re very well stocked as far as goalkeepers are concerned.
“Jason is not ready, he’s just had a bit of a setback so we’ll have to wait and see where we go with that one. We don’t know how bad it is – he trained the other day, thought he was OK and just got a bit of a setback.”
Elsewhere, McDermott told his pre-match press conference that there were a couple of other injury concerns ahead of the clash with the Baggies - and gave an update on Daniel Carrico and Hope Akpan.
“Hal Robson-Kanu has a bit of a knock to his knee, and Mikele Leigertwood also has a knock – so we’ll wait and see on them. Hope played 45 minutes in midweek and Daniel played 70 minutes – so we’ll see. It gives us more options.”
