Brian McDermott has confirmed that the Royals are closing in on a transfer target with Premier League experience.
When asked in his pre-match press conference, the manager said he is hopeful of securing the deal soon – though probably not in time for the visit of West Brom on Saturday.
“We think we’re closer on another player, but it’s never done until it’s done,” he said.
“We’re hopeful it’ll be done sooner rather than later. There could possibly still be more if this one comes off, we’ll see. At this stage, I look at our game on Saturday - once West Brom is done we look ahead again and see what we can do next week. We’re still looking. There’s nothing in the pipeline (after this deal), but I always find with the transfer deadline something always pops up that is useful and interesting.”
Brian also dismissed rumours linking the club with names such as Wilson Palacios and Lee Camp – and also put to bed recent links with Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck and former Royal Kevin Doyle.
“I can’t see Sir Alex Ferguson letting Danny Welbeck out to anybody. I don’t know where that came from to be honest, Danny Welbeck is a great player – but I’m sure Sir Alex Ferguson thinks he’s a great player aswell. Those reports were nothing to do with me.
“I speak to Kevin (Doyle) regularly and he was another Reading legend but he’s a Wolves player and I’m sure they’ll be very keen to make sure he’s a Wolves player. It’s a strange one there, they’ve just lost their manager but I’m sure He’ll be a massive asset to Dean Saunders.”
Finally – McDermott gave an update on Australian midfielder Tomas Rogic.
“I think Tom is going to Celtic for five days, in Marbella. Something will then happen, or it won’t – we’re still interested.”
