Le Fondre sweeps up Player of the Month

Striker Adam Le Fondre was stunned to have been awarded the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award for January 2013.

The Royals forward spoke exclusively to Rading FC Player about the honour - click here to watch it now.

“It is a fantastic achievement for me, it’s madness really. Just to think where I have come from and then to pick up this award, it goes to show what the hard work I have put in amounts to – I’m buzzing from it!

"When the gaffer told me I really didn’t know what to say. It’s quite mad really when you look at the other strikers in the league; Suarez, Van Persie, Aguero, Rooney etc. and so for little old me to win Player of the Month is fantastic.”

The award coincided with Brian McDermott being presented with the Manager of the Month accolade, and the manager was quick to praise Alfie for his achievement, remarking that he is “the ultimate team player.”

“Obviously it’s lovely to hear stuff like that," Le Fondre commented. "It is brilliant for the whole team and I want us all to succeed. At the end of the day this is about everyone here, we all want to stay in the Barclays Premier League and that is the main thing.”

Adam is the first Reading player to receive the Player of the Month award in the Barclays Premier League but he maintains that the recent run of form is a shared achievement.

“I think it is something like 14 points from 21 or something along those lines; we have had a fantastic turn of the year.
We showed real resilience against Manchester City and we have gone from strength to strength since then."

The forward picked up the most goals in the division during January and aims to continue in the same vein. All of his league goals during the month came from the bench and the striker found it hard to a favourite from his impressive January spell.

“Purely based on importance I would have to say the Newcastle second because it was a match winning goal, but finish-wise I prefer my first against Chelsea with that left foot swivel.

"I know a lot of people like the second one but I preferred the first one from a striking point of view.

"It was simply just my movement off the ball and a swivel on my left foot and volley inside the near stick that was particularly pleasing for me. It’s stuff like that which I practice in training so it’s great to see it working for me."

With award in hand and a justified grin on his face, Adam made a point of mentioning the importance of the supporters’ backing each day.

“They’ve been fantastic, the fans have really taken to me ever since I joined the club.

"Now that they have got their new song with my name to go with the Santi Cazorla chant it’s brilliant to hear when the stadium is singing for me, it gets the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Then I just want to get out there and show how good I am.”
