Royals defender Alex Pearce scored on his Ireland debut on Tuesday night, marking his international bow in unforgettable fashion.
He headed home an 86th minute corner to ensure Ireland beat Oman 4-1 at Fulham's Craven Cottage, and he could have scored even earlier but for an excellent save from the Oman keeper, Wigan's Ali Al Habsi. He came on at half time for Marc Wilson, and it was a very proud night for our Academy player. Also on target were ex-Royals Shane Long and Kevin Doyle.
Pearce's central defensive partner Kaspars Gorkss opened the scoring for Latvia away to Bosnia-Herzegovina in a qualifier, but sadly they lost 4-1 in the end. His goal was a tidy left-footed volley on the stretch at the back post from a corner.
Chris Gunter and Simon Church played 90 for Wales away to Serbia but it was a desperately disappointing night as they went down 6-1; Hal Robson-Kanu an unused sub.
Jake Taylor had captain Wales' u21s over the weekend while Pierce Sweeney and Shane Griffin had lined up for Ireland's u19s.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning Adrian Mariappa was due to line up for Jamaica away to USA, having beaten the States 2-1 in the reverse fixture on Friday.
