Dominic Samuel became the Royals youngest ever top flight player on Tuesday evening, after making his professional debut at the Stadium of Light.
The 18-year-old striker graduated from the club’s Academy this summer, after bagging 22 goals in 27 games for the under 18s last season.
He has also been capped by England at under 19 level, scoring on his debut against Ukraine – and looked composed after replacing Garath McCleary with 18 minutes remaining against the Black Cats.
Boss Brian McDermott said, "He's going to be a good young player. We're probably going to have to wait for him [to develop even more], he's made his debut and we're pleased for him."
