Striker joins Royals

Reading Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of striker Billy Sharp from Southampton on an emergency loan.

Sharp, who has 140 career goals to his name, goes straight into the Royals' squad for this weekend's fixture at home to Birmingham City.

Manager Nigel Adkins is now managing Billy for a third time and Sharp has enjoyed his most productive goalscoring spells under the tutelage of the Royals boss, netting more than a goal every two games during Adkins’ successful reigns at Scunthorpe and Southampton.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed an excellent goalscoring ratio throughout a career which has also included spells at Doncaster, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest, but he was the highest scorer in all four English leagues when he starred for Adkins at Glanford Park, setting a club scoring record as the Iron secured the title in 2007. Adkins signed the frontman St Mary’s for a reported seven-figure fee and he continued his goalscoring exploits as the Saints were promoted to the Premier League last year.

Billy is our fifth key addition to the squad this season, with four established internationals having already signed in Royston Drenthe, Danny Williams, Wayne Bridge and Chris Baird. Our policy has been to sign players who can all increase the options available at first team level and all our new additions bring quality and experience.

Tickets for Saturday's game are available now - call 0844 249 1871 or go to www.readingfcdirect.co.uk.
