Sheff Wed 2 (Jones 44, O'Grady 86)
Reading lost 2-0 to npower Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in a friendly match in Portugal this evening.
The Royals had lots of opportunities in the final third, but Wednesday capitalised with a little more efficiency on the night.
How Reading did not score was something of a mystery, but most importantly Brian McDermott gave 45 or more minutes to 20 different players, plus another 90 minutes to Mikkel Andersen.
Nicky Shorey saw a free kick tipped onto the bar early on, while Garath McCleary was denied a goal by a superb defensive tackle.
Reading then looked to have a real chance when a McCleary cross flashed across Simon Church; any touch would have been a goal.
But Mike Jones then scored an excellent goal with literally the last kick of the first half to break the deadlock.
Adam Le Fondre had the ball in the net early in the second half but it was given offside, then Jobi McAnuff was denied by an excellent Bywater save.
Wednesday then had a real chance on the break one-on-one but chipped wide, before Le Fondre saw a couple of chances go off target, first when he pulled wide and then one over.
We kept pushing and had a decent penalty claim waved away, but despite all of our play in the final third it just wasn't to be.
And we had a tough pill to swallow when Chris O'Grady scored on the break despite Andersen's best efforts.
Pavel Pogrebnyak played 45 minutes and looked set to score at 1-0 before he slipped, while he showed very good ability and also excellent closing down.
Simon Church was also back in action and got an important 45 minutes after missing the first tour game through injury.
