The FA has launched a joint initiative with the Gay Football Supporters Network (GFSN) to tackle homophobia in football at all levels of the game.
A major part of the policy is making homophobic abuse a specific offence and the ground regulations now state 'Racial, homophobic and discriminatory abuse, chanting or harassment is strictly forbidden and will result in arrest and/or ejection from the ground.'
GFSN Liaison Officer Richard Howgill said, "These are important steps to tackle homophobia in football. There are thousands of gay football fans who regularly attend matches and our objective is to promote a non-discriminatory atmosphere which encourages gay people to participate actively in our national sport.
"Reading prides itself in welcoming people of all walks of life to Madejski Stadium in a relaxed and non-threatening environment and we are grateful for their backing."
The GFSN was established in 1989 as a social network for gay people and in 2003 introduced the GFSN national league. More information can be found on GFSN at www.gfsn.org.uk
