Appointed first team coach in December 2001 after a highly successful month-long spell as acting number two to Alan Pardew, and was subsequently appointed caretaker manager following Pardew's departure in September 2003.
His previous role was reserve team manager and under 19s coach, and he enjoyed success at both levels, guiding the reserves to a top three finish in 2001 as well as being runners-up in the reserves league cup.
He has helped the development of a number of Royals youngsters like Darius Henderson, Jamie Ashdown, Joe Gamble and Nathan Tyson. Kevin played was born in Sunderland in 1959, and began his career with Birmingham City as the last player to be given a debut by Sir Alf Ramsey.
He was on standby for the England World Cup squad in 1982, and joined Reading from Newcastle in 1991 after a previous spell with Portsmouth. He stayed at Elm Park for two years, playing more than 100 games before joining Stevenage. He returned as a youth coach under Quinn and Gooding and has worked his way up ever since.
