Kevin Doyle says he is happy to fulfil the right midfield role in the absence of John Oster and Glen Little.
The Royals striker proved an able deputy during the 2-1 victory at home to Newcastle United on Saturday.
And while he admits he doesn't want to be a permanent fixture on the right, he was pleased with his showing against the Magpies.
He said, "I was picked to play there and do a job for the team and I was happy with that. I think we played well and I was happy with my performance.
"I'd prefer if the manager had no choice and had to play me up front. But if it gets me a game and it's helping the team out I've got to be happy.
"With the injuries to the right midfielders he's looking for someone to play there. It was a nice game for me to play there because we were on the front foot for most of it.
"But I definitely don't want to nail down that position! A couple of the coaches said to me afterwards that I could be stuck there for a few games now. But as long as it's not all season I'll be happy with it.
"I've played there before, and scored two at Blackburn from that position last weekend when I came on for half an hour. And I played there for a while at Cork City as well. But naturally I'm a striker, and defensively wise right midfield doesn't do a lot for me. But if it's something I have to do for the team then I'll play there."
Doyle said that he felt the Royals fully deserved to take all three points after an impressive showing that makes it three wins out of three on home soil. And he feels that the team are fully focussed on improving their away fortunes ahead of this weekend's trip to Fulham.
He added, "If it had been a draw I think that would have been a travesty because we played so well. It was just nice for us to get the winner and take all three points. Our form at home has been good, obviously our away record isn't so good.
"But that's something we can improve on and put right. If we can keep our home record good then we'll be fine this season.
"Fulham are a team who are in and around us in the league table. Going away to Fulham is a big game for us to try and get something.
"We just need to stop conceded the amount of goals we've been in the away games, which has been highlighting to people that we're not playing well. If we can keep it tight then it will really bode well for us."
Doyle said that the victory over Newcastle was the perfect tonic for everyone connected with the club. He says that the air of gloom that may have descended after heavy defeats at Portsmouth and Blackburn has now completely lifted from within the squad.
He added, "We've not been having the nightmare that everyone has been making out. We said before the game that if we won the Newcastle match we'd be at the same points total as this stage last season.
"We haven't done brilliantly, but we haven't done bad either when you look at the amount of teams below us in the table.
"Just because we weren't fighting for a UEFA Cup place at the start of the season again, people were sort of getting worried. But me personally, I was confident we'd be fine and I still am confident."
