Sonko - Break will do me good

Posted on: Wed 02 Jan 2008

Ibrahima Sonko has held his hands up following his dismissal against Portsmouth.

The defender was sent off just three minutes into our New Year's Day encounter, and we eventually lost 2-0.

There was no question that it was a foul on Benjani, although there has been some debate about whether a red card was warranted.

But he said, "I was in the wrong. He sent me off, I am not going to complain.

"Referees make their decision and they have to stick to it."

It was the third penalty he had conceded in just four games, and he admitted, "It is probably a bad time for me. I will have to start again when I get back from the Cup Of Nations.

"I go on Sunday and I've been told I'm in the final squad. I need a break, I have been giving away too many goals and costing us too many points.

"Hopefully this will be the last one now, and I will start afresh when I am back.

"I have apologised to the boys, all I can do is say sorry, I have told them they did well.

"They are fine with me, they have said you got yourself in the situation you could do nothing about, it is just one game, but I blame myself.

"It is not a freak penalty and I think it will be a good break for me to go away."

Steve Coppell has said there's been a natural downturn in Ibu's form, as the initial adrenaline rush of returning from a long-term injury wears off.

Ibu said, "I was so excited to come back, I was fresh and now my form is going down, I don't know what it is.

"I feel slower, so I suppose it is down to the eight months I have been away. I am not going to use it as an excuse though, I had some good games and I had some bad games. It was probably one of my worst games for a long time today.

"I think I am more excited about the Cup Of Nations now than I have been recently.

"The fact I have been sent off and am going to miss a game it is not a bad thing me going away.

"It is probably going to help me out as I need a break."

Coppell added that there has been too much weight placed on his defender's shoulders.

He told Reading World, "We've been expecting too much of him. He's been magnificent for this club.

"He had a major cruciate reconstruction, and it takes a long time to fully recover. Physically you can be there, but getting to match speed takes time.

"He came back and his enthusiasm and desire put him in the frame. But then there's the grind to get into, and that sometimes takes its toll.

"Ibu is amazingly honest about his performances, and he would be the first to question his input in the last couple of games.

"It may well be that this is a decent time to reassess. He'll have time on his hands when he goes away, and we'll look forward to having him back, like Fae and Bikey."

All three of our players will leave after this weekend's game with Tottenham.

Full highlights from Pompey, as well as Steve Coppell's reaction, are on Reading World now.
