Oster: Hughes is a top boss

Posted on: Fri 28 Mar 2008

John Oster thinks that Mark Hughes has all the qualities to become the next boss of Manchester United.

The Royals winger knows all about Hughes' ability as a manager, having played for the Blackburn boss during his time with the Wales national squad.

Oster is not surprised that Blackburn have re-established themselves as a regular contender for Europe under Hughes' very successful stewardship.

He said, "I played under Mark for Wales and he was just brilliant. He commands the upmost respect for what he's done in the game, and as a manager he is brilliant.

"He has good backroom staff with Eddie Niedzwiecki and Mark Bowen. They were with him at Wales as well, and he's taken them to Blackburn because he knows them quite well. He has a good squad there and they're going well.

"Mark is not one to rant and rave all the time, but when he talks you listen. He gets his point across, a bit like Steve Coppell really, but he can blow his top if needs be. He is one of those people you have the utmost respect for, and you do take in what he says because he knows what he is talking about.

"He's taken Blackburn from being a mediocre Premier League team to one that should be heading into Europe. They are a very good team.

"There's no surprise to me that whenever a decent job comes up his name gets put forward. He's a good manager and he'll only go onto bigger and better things - who knows, he could be the next Manchester United manager one day."
