A number of former Royals will play in a charity game for the Geoff Thomas Foundation this Sunday in Maidenhead, and Reading boss Steve Coppell says this is a worthy cause we can all support.
Ex-Reading men Michael Gilkes, Mick Gooding, Martin Allen, Barry Hunter, Steve Wood, David Lee and Keith Scott are among those who will play in the fundraiser at Maidenhead United FC this Sunday, kick off 1pm. Kerry Dixon has also agreed to play, subject to availability.
Steve Coppell signed Geoff at Crystal Palace many years ago, and is a real admirer of his courage. Steve said, "He led my team for many years, and in a world where there aren't many captains, he was a captain in the truest sense.
"The way he led the team is the same way he has confronted his health issues that he's hopefully now overcome. The way in which he's now giving giving back to others going through the same thing is something we can all support and admire."
Ex-Arsenal manager Terry Neill will coach a Legends XI including Micky Hazard, Alan Knight, Darryl Powell, Simon Garner and Mike Small. Bontcho Guentchev, who played in a World Cup semi-final with Bulgaria, also looks set to play.
Geoff is '90% certain' he will play after running the London Marathon this past Sunday with wife Julie. Dermot Gallagher will be the match referee.
Entry is £5, £2 and £1. Arrival by 12.30pm is advised. Maidenhead United is located in York Road, Maidenhead, a few minutes walk from Maidenhead train station.
All gate monies will go to the Geoff Thomas Foundation, which is committed to the development and delivery of new treatments for patients with cancer and leukaemia across the country.
Steve Coppell is scheduled to play in an upcoming golf day for the Foundation on 8th May. More details of the charity can be found at www.geoffthomasfoundation.com
