Unearthed: Our fifth England player

Posted on: Fri 16 May 2008

When our defender Nicky Shorey lined up for England at Wembley last year, he was said to be the fourth Reading player to have worn the Three Lions.

However, Reading fan and published author Roger Titford has unearthed details of a fifth player: Edgar Field.

Roger explained, "Edgar played twice for England in 1876 and 1881. He is not generally credited as a Reading player because he also played for other clubs at the same time, Clapham Rovers being one.

"Some think his Reading career did not begin until 1882. But he - and his two brothers, Herbert and Charles - feature in the Reading line-up v Swifts on 23rd Oct 1880.

"On 26th Feb 1881 he played 'back' in 'one of the most exciting, hardest fought and closely contested games ever played at Reading' - a 0-0 with Marlow.

"Just a fortnight later he was in the England team, and on 12th March 1881 he played for England against Scotland, scoring the first ever international own goal.

"He was made captain of Reading the following season. Like Edward Haygarth who played in 1875 he is another of Reading's 'missing' England internationals."

Edgar is pictured top left in the image, one of the oldest recorded England team photos.
