'Our record will never be beaten'

Posted on: Sat 02 Aug 2008

Steve Sidwell says our incredible 106-point haul in the 2005/6 Championship triumph will never be beaten.

The Royals lost just two games all season as they romped to top spot by a huge margin, and Sidwell played 29(+4) games, scoring ten goals in the process.

Speaking in an interview with this Saturday's matchday programme, he said, "I still talk about it when I meet up with the players from that squad, and amongst other players in football, and I just can't describe or explain it!

"We had a lot of talented players who had hunger and desire, a great manager and coaching staff, and the fans getting right behind us...it was just a fairytale.

"I remember when we were 20 points ahead of third place Glen Little was saying we need a few more wins - but realistically we were promoted by Christmas, it was unbelievable!

"I think you don't realise until much later just what you're achieving - when you're caught up in the middle of it you're just worried about winning every game. It was an amazing season and I honestly don't think it will ever be beaten."

Sidwell will be back at Madejski Stadium this weekend with his new club Aston Villa for a pre-season friendly encounter.

Ticket for Saturday's game are on general sale, just £10 for adults and £6 concessions. They are available by telephone on 0844 249 1871, online or in person.

Both the west and east stand ticket offices will be open on Saturday for walk-up sales, and there is no increase in price if you wish to buy on the day.
