Reserves claim another big win

Posted on: Wed 30 Jul 2008

The Royals reserves claimed another big win with a 4-1 victory at Maidenhead United on Tuesday night.

Fresh from their 5-0 win at Basingstoke over the weekend, Nigel Gibbs' young side were again in free-scoring form and went into a 2-0 half-time lead through Simon Church and Daniel Joyce.

Striker Nicholas Bignall added a third immediately after the restart before Richard Pacquette pulled one back for the home side with an overhead kick.

The scoring was completed inside the final ten minutes by Icelandic youth international Gylfi Sigurdsson (pictured).

Gibbs was delighted with his team's performance and told readingfc.co.uk, "It was a different game to Saturday - more physical, and they started really well.

"We were under a bit of pressure in the opening 20 minutes but then got into the game and took the lead with a good goal from a set-piece - well delivered by Gary Frewen and headed home by Simon Church.

"We then started to play some really good stuff - Danny Joyce added a second with a fantastic half-volley, and Nicholas Bignall added the third with a good chip after Gylfi Sigurdsson's through ball.

"Gylfi scored the last goal with a brilliant left-footed curler from 20 yards, so they were four excellent goals to add to Saturday's five.

"Fitness levels are the most important thing at this time of year, but scoring nine goals is very pleasing and we also worked hard defensively to only concede one goal in those two games."

Team: McCarthy (Kitteridge), Spence, Kelly, Kamdjo, Bennett, Joyce (Bozanic), Sigurdsson, Bryant (Bossman), Frewen (Taylor), Church, Bignall (Illugason)
