Chairman: Let's bounce back

Posted on: Tue 05 Aug 2008

Royals Chairman John Madejski is hopeful that the Royals can bounce straight back from relegation this season.

After dropping out of the Barclays Premier League, Madejski is keen to get back into the top flight once again.

He said, "It was devastating to go down, and £22million goes out of the window on the back of the odd goal. But we must move on from that, and hope we're a yo-yo club who can bounce straight back into the Premiership.

"We're very excited about the season, and it's arguably the most open league there is anywhere.

"Only a handful can win the Premiership but that's not the case here. It's a very interesting opportunity for us and we're very much looking forward to it."

The Chairman is delighted to be going into the new campaign with Steve Coppell still at the helm, having spent the early part of the summer waiting for the boss' decision whether to stay or not.

Madejski said, "Steve was just so overwhelmed about the amount of fans and people who wanted him to stay.

"I've said it many times before, nobody ever said a bad word about Steve's management. He's very popular, and is one of the best managers in England, if not the best."

With the transfer window beginning to close, Madejski is hopeful we can keep hold of our players to give us the best chance of success.

"There's not too long now. There's always the threat of Premiership clubs coming in, but we've got a good set of players here, they're committed to the cause and I hope they can stay to get us back in the Premiership.

"Obviously Dave Kitson has been one to leave. He's an extremely good player, he's 28, and the lure of the Premiership was too great, especially at that age. If he was younger he may have stayed, who knows? That's football and I wish him all the best."
