Steve explains Mooney move
Steve Coppell says David Mooney's goalscoring record is what attracted us to signing the Irish frontman.
The 23-year-old signed a three-year contract with Reading this week, and he is the current top scorer in Ireland this season, as well as winning both the Golden Boot and player of the season in 2007.
David trained with his new teammates for the first time on Thursday morning, and Steve told our online TV station Reading World he is very pleased to have the frontman.
Steve told us, "He's a goalscorer and a player we've seen quite a lot of this season. He has a good record for finding the back of the net.
"A few clubs have looked at him and we just thought now is a good time to bring him in. There's no pressure to throw him in straight away, he can learn all about us and then give his best. We're healthy up front.
"We've had a link with Cork, not a formal link, but there's someone who watches their games for us and we thought we'd take the gamble.
"You can never say he'll just be back-up, he'll be first choice or whatever. In many ways we signed Kevin Doyle as back-up but then he started the season. You can never plan on who will be injured or what chances come up.
"He's one of many Irish players we have here, but it's not by intention. We just feel it's a good market to watch football, they play in our summer so there's plenty of chance to get over there and watch games.
"We don't know for sure when he'll be in the first team yet, it will depend on that settling in period and how he adapts. There's no timeframe on it."
