Madejski Stadium ten years old today
Ten years ago today Madejski Stadium hosted its very first game when the Royals defeated Luton Town 3-0.
It has been an incredible decade for the club ever since, including two promotions, one of them a record-breaking Championship, our first ever years in the top flight, a cruel relegation and so many games to remember.
Steve Coppell has been in charge in RG2 for almost five years now, and he paid homage to Chairman John Madejski for our state of the art home.
Steve said, "It's a terrific stadium, and it took the vision, drive and determination of the Chairman to get it done.
"It's obviously a massive contrast to Elm Park, although that was lovely in its own way as an old stadium."
"The Madejski is state of the art. Ten years can be a long time in stadium development, but everyone who comes here compliments the viewing lines, the access, the facilities, the surface, the dressing room.
"It's still cutting edge, so congratulations to the Chairman.
"For me, my favourite moment would have to be the end of our promotion campaign when we got to 106 points in the last game. Then we could really celebrate!"
Club captain Graeme Murty is the only player to have been here for all ten years, and he will be at the Stadium Megastore at 3pm this afternoon for a signing session to launch our new book 'A Decade Of Dreams,' which looks back on Madejski Stadium's story so far.
Full video highlights from that first game are live on Reading World now. An extended preview, including the first ever goal, is available for free now.
