Boss considers policy change

Posted on: Tue 16 Sep 2008

Royals boss Steve Coppell says that after the next international break he may have to consider leaving out players who have been on duty with their countries.

We lost 2-0 at Ipswich on Saturday, and the game came after five of our players had been away for World Cup qualifiers; Doyle, Hunt, Long, Kebe and Bikey.

Last season we lost at Bolton, Sunderland, Blackburn, Man City and Everton after international games, drawing at home to Blackburn on the sole occasion we were at home after a round of UEFA and FIFA matches.

Steve said, "Next time we have another away game after an international break I'm going to have to think about leaving players out.

"It's no excuse for the performance. We only had five or six players away, albeit they are key players.

"Last season we had six international breaks and five of them were away games afterwards. We'd asked the computer to reconsider but again it was the same for the first one this year. Like I say, maybe next time I'll leave players out."

Ipswich had two players on duty last week, with Gareth McAuley and Owen Garvan away with their countries.

After our next international break at the start of October we travel to Preston North End.
