Live updates

7.43pm - The teams are in and sweeping changes for both sides. Stoke make eight changes to their side, with Kitson rested and Sonko not fit to feature. The Royals have made ten changes from the side that started against Watford at the weekend - Andre Bikey the only survivor from Vicarage Road.

Brynjar Gunnarsson starts for the first time since a trip to Villa and Kalifa Cisse is also back in action.

7.45pm - The two sides have warmed up and are out ready for a 7.45pm start. Ivar Ingimarsson is wearing the armband tonight. Brynjar Gunnarsson gets a good round of applause from the home fans, wo recognise his days as a Potter.

1 mins - Scott Golbourne hasn't got up to the speed of the game yet - a half-hearted header is followed by a loose touch which almost allows Liam Lawrence a chance. Ivar Ingimarsson is there to clear the danger.

3 mins - Cisse wins a header and it drops to Long in midfield. He bundles past a challenge scampers forward a little and then tries to place a right-footed effort into the top right corner. It sails high over the crossbar though.

7 mins - GOAL! Stoke win a corner on the left and Lawrence whips it in dangerously. Vincent Pericard rises above everyone and nods it past Federici from six yards out.

11 mins - A free kick is followed by two corners which trouble Stoke but the only effort on goal is from Gunnarsson from the edge of the area. Simonsen watches it skim well wide though.

13 mins - Lita wins a free kick on the very edge of the area to the left. James Henry arrows it in at pace but it seems to hit Ingimarsson and bobble down for Stoke to clear. It could have gone anywhere.

14 mins - Sidibe and Pericard at the other end get in each other's way as they look for a yard to shoot just inside the Royals box. Pericard comes away with it but falls over comically. Federici comes to pick it up.

17 mins - Henry has it on the right and plays a great ball in for the overlapping Julian Kelly. He gets to it before it reaches the byline and crosses it into the box. Cisse looks good to get a head on it but Simonsen plucks it out of the air.

18 mins - The ball breaks for Convey who winds up to shoot from 25 yards out. He does so and sweetly strikes a left-footed effort that Simonsen is well behind and does well to cling onto.

18 mins - A long goal kick is allowed to bounce by the Royals back line and Pericard goes up to get a head to it. Federici has come and gets something on it, but it drops for Sidibe who has time to pick his spot. He takes too long though and Bikey blocks it.

22 mins - Gunnarsson draws a foul 20 yards out in a central position. Bikey and Convey stand over it and Bikey smashes it into the wall. It falls out to Gunnarsson who tries to hook it goalwards first time. It flies high into the stand though.

25 mins - Good strength from Bikey barges Sidibe out of the way at the far post. The home fans half appeal for a penalty but it was good defending from the Cameroonian.

33 mins - The game is lacking much fluency at the moment. Misplaced passes are plentiful. Stoke look the more likely - they are closing Reading down quicker and seem to want it more at the moment.

43 mins - Another shot on target for Reading but it lacks the conviction to trouble Simonsen. Henry it is with the shot from 20 yards out but the Stoke stopper is down low to his right to gather it.

44 mins - PENALTY! Stoke don't clear their area and Bikey nips in to collect it on the right side of the penalty spot. He is tripped by a stray Higginbotham leg and the referee points to the spot. James Henry beckons the crowd to throw it to him and he'll take it. He strides forward and sends Simonsen the wrong way, slotting cooly low into the left corner!

HALF TIME - Back in the game but Stoke have been the better so far. Could go either way in the second half.

49 mins - GOAL! Bikey concedes a free kick 35 yards out and it is floated in to the far post. Sidibe gets his head to it but it ricochets off Ingimarsson and over the bar for a corner. Reading half clear from the corner but Whelan's drive back into the box pinballs to Sidibe who produces good reactions to swipe it home from 10 yards out.

53 mins - Reading are struggling to defend any crosses into the box and Stoke get a flurry of corners. The last is gathered by Federici and Reading get some respite.

57 mins - Good work from Kelly and Henry down the right sees Kelly touch it back to Gunnarsson. He takes a touch forward and drives it across Simonsen, who pats it out into his six yard box. It falls away from Lita and Stoke hack it out to Cisse who hammers it high and wide from 20 yards out.

60 mins - Golbourne does well to cross from the left corner flag. It's headed out as far as Cisse who tries an ambitious left footed first time volley that skews well wide.

62 mins - Stoke substitution. Sidibe is off and Philips is on. He moves to the left wing and Crsswell goes up front.

65 mins - Cisse pulls a Stoke man back on the right side and City have a free kick. The ball is slid out to tee up Whelan who drives low from 20 yards out. Federici watches it well to save the ball that skims through a host of bodies and he clutches onto it with Cresswell in close attendance.

73 mins - Not a lot happening I'm afraid. Stoke have got this wrapped up at the moment. No sign of any changes from the bench just yet.

74 mins - GOAL! And what a goal! Gunnarsson does brilliantly to keep the ball in midfield and he lays it off for Kelly on the right. He crosses it low into Lita's chest and Long nudges it back for Henry on the edge of the box. He unleashes a thundering left-footed effort past Simonsen and inside the right post. A great goal!

77 mins - What a miss. A cross from the left floats all the way across to Henry who fires a very powerful cross across goal. It looks like Lita just has to get his head in the way and he stands there, but it glances off his head and wide of the far post from a yard out.

78 mins - Stoke substitution. Ricardo Fuller is on for Cresswell.

80 mins - Henry fancies his hat-trick and tries his luck with his left from 18 yards out. It is blocked out to Kelly on the wing who delivers but it is cleared out for a corner which doesn't trouble Simonsen.

81 mins - He always pulls a stunnign save out in these cup clashes and Federici has done it again. Pericard places a downward header towards the bottom left corner and somehow the Aussie stopper claws it off his line and away.

86 mins - Henry and Kelly combine down the right and Kelly wins a corner. Henry delivers it too deep and Convey collects it on the far side. He passes it inside to Ingimarsson, who tries to place a shot past Simonsen. The keeper gather it without any fuss though.

89 mins - Henry crosses into the box and Lita is rising with two Stoke defenders and Simonsen. It goes out for a corner which eventually drops for Convey on the edge of the box. He shoots but it takes one bounce and into Simonsen's arms.

90(+1) mins - Lita and Convey had efforts as Reading throw everything at it in injury time. Stoke clear it though and break. The cross comes in from the left but Ingimarsson has tracked back to head it over. the corner flies over from a Stoke header and that should be that.

FULL TIME - That's right - we have extra time! A long trip back is awaiting us and the loyal Royals who have made the journey as another half an hour is about to begin.

Steve Coppell is having a good long chat with his side. Anyone who doesn't think the cup means much to this manager should take a look at the purpose with which he's delivering these instructions.

91 mins - Bikey heads a corner clear and Henry wins it just inside his own half. He picks out a great pass to find Lita bursting forward and the striker hammers a low left-footed first time effort across Simonsen. The City keeper does well to parry and then gather the rebound.

94 mins - Royals substitution. Gylfi Sigurdsson is coming on for Gunnarsson - who is given a great round of applause from both sets of fans. He has been very good on his return to the team.

97 mins - A couple of headers fly over from Stoke but Federici is untroubled.

97 mins - Royals substitution - Cisse is off for Alex Pearce.

99 mins - Stoke break from a Reading corner and Fuller speeds down the right. Henry is tracking back at pace but he cuts inside and shoots left footed. Convey slides in to try to block but it rolls through for Federici to save low to his right. Convey stays down but he looks ok to continue.

100 mins - Stoke substitution. Higginbotham is off for Cort.

102 mins - A great move from left to right sees it land at Henry's feet. He arrows a great cross into the far post where Golbourne heads it goalwards. Simonsen produces a stunning reaction save to push it wide.

105 mins - Lawrence is penalised for a push on Golbourne so his double strike at goal which Federici blocks is simply to waste time. No card is produced though.

105 mins - At the turnaround Reading make their final sub. Convey is replaced by Dave Mooney.

107 mins - Henry crosses from the right and it glances off Long's head and high towards the far post. It's just beyond Mooney but out for a corner. The set piece is flapped at and Bikey tries to recycle it on the right but his cross goes behind the byline and it's a goal kick.

109 mins - Fuller is sent through the middle by a long ball over the top. He drags a shot well wide and seems to have hurt himself in the process, needing lengthy treatment. He'll try to come back on but Stoke may effectively be reduced to ten men here, having made all three subs.

112 mins - Another good cross from Henry has Simonsen stretching. It's been an impressive display from the youngster.

114 mins - Lewis Buxton tries his luck from distance and it's dipping dangerously. Federici saves it well though.

118 mins - Golbourne crosses it in from the left and Ingimarsson wins it with a glancing header. It drifts wide of the far post though and Bikey can't get a touch.

120 mins - Penalties! Reading survive a series of Delap-less long throws and it will be a shootout!
