2:28pm - Steve Coppell has named an unchanged starting line-up again, so Brynjar Gunnarsson has recovered from a minor knock picked up with Iceland in midweek to keep his place.
James Harper returns to the bench in place of James Henry, who is warming up and part of the travelling squad but will not be involved.
Preston have some injury problems but include new loanee Eddie Nolan on the bench. Neil Mellor is only names as a substitute.
2:56pm - The weather is grim - overcast and showery. My colleague is currently trying to mend his glasses before kick-off so if the final match report that is launched at full time seems a little sketchy it's because he spent the first five minuted trying to feed a tiny screw through a small hole on his frames.
2:58pm - The two teams are led out on the far side to the press box but in front of North End's new stand.
1 min - Preston kick off on a very gloomy afternoon. We could almost do with the floodlights here.
4 mins - Kebe wins a corner on the right and Stephen Hunt delivers. It's headed clear but a quick throw on the right releases Hunt. He touches it onto his left foot and shoots but he doesn't connect too well and it bobbles into Andy Lonergan's arms.
7 mins - Jon Parkin receives it into his body on the edge of the area and he turns Ivar Ingimarsson to shoot at goal. Hahnemann has to dive full stretch to his right to push it clear - so Preston have the first attempt at goal.
12 mins - A cross from the left is calmly cleared by Armstrong, but he nods it into Parkin's feet. He tries a speculative first time effort but it skims just wide.
13 mins - At the other end Kevin Doyle chases after a ball down the right and crosses into the box. Brynjar Gunnarsson rises well and nods a looping header goalwards, and Noel Hunt leaps high at the near post to touch it against the stanchion with his header. But Preston scramble it away eventually.
14 mins - Chris Sedgwick has some space on the break down the right and he slides a low cross into the box. Hahnemann does well to slide out and palm it away from the lurcking Parkin at the far post and it ricochets of Ingimarsson and back to the Royals stopper. Appeals for a handball from Ingimarsson are waved away.
16 mins - Stephen Hunt has been ordered to go to the bench for a wound it seems and while he's off Sedgwick clatters Armstrong in a very hefty challenge that amazingly goes unpunished besides a free kick 35 yards out. It's floated in and Doyle flicks a brilliantly places header towards the top right corner only for Lonergan to somehow claw it off his line. Great save.
27 mins - PENALTY! Noel Hunt has it on the right side of the box and he touches it towards the byline. It's a heavy touch so St Ledger comes across and Hunt falls over his leg in trying to nick it round him. The referee points to the spot!! The ball had gone out of play but the foul was definitely drawn so it's a penalty! Stephen Hunt steps up and sends Lonergan the wrong way by passing it inside the left post.
30 mins - Burnley are a goal up at home to Birmingham and Wolves are behind to Coventry at Molineux. As results stand Reading would go top tonight. Long way to go though!
32 mins - Noel hunt scampers down the right and cuts a cross back into the box but it's behind two Reading men and North End can clear. It's quite an open game so you feel there are more goals in the game.
36 mins - Preston are threatening and a tasty ball is dinked into the edge of the six yard box. Two Preston men are homing in on it but Jem Karacan does suberbly to react fastest and nod it back to his keeper with a header that had to be delicate.
42 mins - Lonergan fizzes out a throw to McEveley but the left back isn't watching it and Hunt nips in to touch it away from him but sadly it goes out for a throw to prevent embarrassment from the home side.
45(+1) mins - Kebe crosses from the right and it pinballs in the box, coming off Doyle's leg at one point. It doesn't fall to a Reading leg though and the hosts clear.
HALF TIME - Reading much the better side so far and 1-0 up through the Hunt brother connection.
48 mins - McEveley concedes a corner on the right and Stephen Hunt delivers. It is nodded down but Kebe collects and turns to face goal. From a tight angle he arrows in a shot but Lonergan is down well to gather low at his near post.
52 mins - Youl Mawene is restricted to trying to beat Hahnemann from 30 yards and the US stopper just watches it sail well wide of his left upright.
54 mins - OWN GOAL! Oh no! Sedgwick crosses from the left and Hahnemann comes for it. Ingimarsson collides with him and the ball and it ricochets off the Icelander and into the gaping net. Reading are pegged back by themselves! Completely against the run of play.
57 mins - Almost an immediate response. Kebe races along the byline from the right and cuts it back to Noel Hunt who turns his man. He stabs it goalwards but Lonrgan saves and then gets up to punch the spiralling ball off Stephen Hunt's head and away.
58 mins - North End have their tails up here though. Parkin gets it 20 yards out and unleashes a fantastic drive. Hahnemann produced a wonderful save though to tip it onto his crossbar. From the resulting corner St Ledger loops a flicked header just over the bar.
63 mins - Lonergan can't prevent a deflected cross spinning behind for a corner and Hunt's corner falls to Karacan on the edge of the area. He leans back in volleying it goalwards though and it sails high and wide.
65 mins - Noel Hunt finds Kebe who scampers at his man. He touches it back to tee up Doyle and Doyle shoots left-footed. It takes a slight deflection and Lonergan is at full stretch, but it goes just wide of the left post.
66 mins - At the other end Hahnemann comes out of his box to collect a hopeful ball, but instead of clearing he tries to control it. He's closed down but Hahnemann gets himself out of a sticky situation in the end.
67 mins - Wallace wins a corner which Parkin heads down. It's bouncing up and Hahnemann is surely fouled in trying to get to it, but is bounces inches wide of the right post anyway for a goal kick.
69 mins - Reading substitution. Doyle is replaced by Shane Long up front.
72 mins - Elliott is in behind Bikey here and Hahnemann isn't sure whether to come. He does in the end and Elliott taps it round him and goes to ground. No contact there though and Hahnemann just forced him wide. Nervous moments though as the home crowd shriek for a spotkick.
77 mins - Mawene concedes a corner on the right side and a better delivery from Hunt this time. Lonergan does very well to punch it clear. Armstrong recycles it back to Hunt and his cross is blocked by McEveley.
78 mins - Rosenior's cross comes off Noel Hunt and flies high into the air. He shapes to volley it and does so well froma tight angle but Lonergan parries it out for another corner.
81 mins - Billy Jones tries his luck from 25 yards out and Hahnemann has to touch it over with another good save. Wallace delivers the corner from the right and all the Reading players seem to get in each others' way. It drops to Stephen Elliott who converts from close range.
83 mins - Preston substitution. Jason Jarrett replaces Wallace. Reading double substitution - James Harper and Kalifa Cisse are on for Jem Karacan and Kalifa Cisse.
88 mins - Stephen Hunt wins a free kick and delivers it from the left himself. Noel gets a glancing header onto it and it hits the post and is scrambled clear.
89 mins - A good ball is passed through the Preston back line and Kebe is onto it. He turns and shoots in one motion from a very tight angle. It hits the side netting though. In the melee Long seemed to be pulled back and for a second people think the referee has pointed to the spot. He in fact was signalling for a goal kick but changes his mind to award a corner, which fizzes across the box and away.
90 mins - Rosenior flicks it on to Kebe on the right wing and he cuts in and runs across the edge of the area. Harper is avaiable for the cut back but Kebe lashes it just over the bar with his left boot.
90 mins - Preston substitution. Elliott is replaced by Neil Mellor.
90(+3) mins - A long Bikey header is flicked on by Ingimarsson and then back by Noel Hunt. Rosenior hooks it goalwards and it just hits Mawene's head. Unbelievably unlucky. The corner comes in and Lonergan makes a hash of it. Kebe stabs it goalwards but it's blocked by someone. Cleared!
FULL TIME - A game Reading were in complete control of turned on a defensive error. Preston found confidence, scrambled home a winner and although Reading were the better side for much of the match, they leave Deepdale without any reward.
