Rosenior left in disbelief

Posted on: Mon 20 Oct 2008

Liam Rosenior was left absolutely flabbergasted by a last-minute clearance to deny him what looked to be a certain goal in Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Preston.

With time almost up, Rosenior got on the end of Noel Hunt's flick to unleash a thunderous effort, and with keeper Andy Lonergan beaten, Youl Mawene somehow got a toe on the ball and got it over the bar from a yard out.

It was a sickening end to a hugely frustrating afternoon, and Reading had the game in the palm of their hand, only to gift North End the points with two poor goals.

Liam commented, "I'd seen the goalkeeper was out, I made sure I hit it where he wasn't, I was lying on the floor celebrating and saw it ended up in the stand!

"It sums it up for us in terms of how the day went. I don't think anyone who saw the game can dispute the fact we were the better team for long periods. But ultimately they got the three points and that is what we need to look at.

"We conceded two very, very soft goals and we are extremely disappointed about that. You can talk about luck but from our point of view it just should not happen.

"We deserved at least a draw, when we dictated the game we should have scored more goals and been more than one up. We've got a lot to be disappointed about but if we keep on playing like we did for long periods then we will win a lot of games."

Striker Kevin Doyle pinpointed a second half spell as the period that cost us all three points, saying, "We lot in some sloppy goals and a poor 20 minutes let us down.

"On saying that, we still had chances - they just weren't going in. We had ones off the line and I thought a stonewall penalty on Cisse.

"For the goals there was miscommunication or whatever, but it's happened now, there's no point dwelling on it. Ivar and Buddy have both saved us many times, Buddy made a couple of cracking stops in this game. There's no blame, it was unfortunate.

"Our second half was poor, the manager said to be ready for Preston coming at us, but we weren't. We were cruising at the break but ended up throwing it away."

Doyle was away on international duty this week, but refused to use that as any kind of excuse. "We can't be blaming that.

"Having players away is a sign that yout team is doing well and you've got decent players in your team."
