Our own goal explained

Posted on: Tue 21 Oct 2008

Marcus Hahnemann and Ivar Ingimarsson were both left hugely disappointed with the goals conceded in Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Preston North End.

The first goal on 52 minutes came from an innocuous-looking cross, but the ball hit Ingimarsson, and with Hahnemann out of his goal it rolled into the net.

Ingimarsson said, "I got the shout and it's ended up hitting me. Afterwards I think I should have cleared it, no matter the shout. But you can't take it back now."

Hahnemann explained, "I called for it, Ivar tried to get out of the way but it hit his hip and has gone in. The amount of times the ball is in the box, things are going to happen."

The second goal on 81 saw the big American come for a corner, but he failed to make contact and Stephen Elliott tapped home simply from very close range.

"For the second I've come for it, and as I've gone up I've hit somebody in the crowd, it's knocked me off and I've missed it. It's gone to their guy and it's 2-1.

"We're just really disappointed with the result. Even after we went 2-1 down we had chances, things off the line and Cisse might have had a penalty.

"We hit the post twice and it was not our day. We can't let it deflect us, we maybe need to learn from mistakes but we were unlucky."

Ivar continued, "Afterwards you really think 'how did we lose?' We were sloppy on a few occasions and that has cost us points in the end.

"Apart from the goals they've only had two shots, both outside the box. When it was 1-0 the only danger was us giving it away."
