Reading's reserves earned an emphatic 4-0 away win over Charlton on Monday evening.

Shane Long scored two, including a penalty that he won himself. The Irishman also set up a goal for strike partner Leroy Lita, and Jem Karacan also got on the scoresheet.

Coach Nigel Gibbs told readingfc.co.uk, "It was a very, very good performance right through from one to eleven.

"We showed real energy, played with good quality and created some good chances throughout.

"We thoroughly deserved to win and we can be well pleased with how we played.

"Shane scored the first after closing down their back four and forcing an underhit backpass, then rounding the keeper to score.

"For the second Shane won it in the centre circle and broke a ball to Leroy, who got one-one-one and powered inside onto his right foot to make it 2-0.

"The third came with good play. Hal Robson-Kanu allowed Oliver Bozanic to get in a good cross, then James Henry got onto it and Jem Karacan hammered home.

"Lastly Shane won a pen and scored himself right into the top corner."

Former Reading man Ulises De La Cruz lined up for Charlton after joining Phil Parkinson's Addicks on trial.
