Q&A with Glen Little

Posted on: Thu 26 Mar 2009

So Glen, how's the toe?
Yes it's alright. I could have played at Doncaster really, but I was a bit surprised to have played those two games back to back just beforehand - obviously Jimmy got injured and the gaffer put me in so I happily got on with it.

If it had been the last game of the season, you would have just gone with it, but I think the gaffer had it in his mind that he needed to freshen it up again and for me to get ready for the Palace game. But the team did well, won at Doncaster, and if you win he keeps the same team so there's not a lot you can do. But with the injuries at the weekend again, I might get another chance.

How do you see the table now?
You just tick off the games, don't you! Sheffield United have had a good run, my old team Burnley are having a good go at it too. It's tight, but we're still in there with a chance. We would have liked to be in a stronger position with some better results, especially at home. But it's still exciting times and you hope within the next few weeks, with Coventry and then the Easter weekend games, they come thick and fast and then the table will really take shape.

The games against Sheff Utd and Birmingham are obviously massive, against teams up there. You look forward to the big games, there'll be a great crowd, great atmosphere - and that's what it's all about at this stage of the season. I've not been involved in the play-offs much, I think the only time I have been was when I was on loan here four or five years ago. The one we blew by losing to Wolves. I remember the games, they were exciting. No-one wants the play-offs though.

I've done everything else in my career - I've had promotions, the Championship, playing in the Premier League, but I've never won a play-off final. If you asked the Hull players they'll tell you they had a great time, winning at Wembley. It'd be another fantastic opportunity, but you don't want that extra end to the season, you want to get it done and dusted.

The important thing first and foremost is that we get enough points to get into the play-offs - I think three or four points might be enough to seal a place. And then hopefully there'll be four games left and we can go into the last game of the season against Birmingham with something to fight for.

You want the games to come thick and fast now, because you just want to see what happens. We just want to try and win some games and finish the season well.

Is the title too far now?
The aim is to go up - it doesn't matter how you do it, just that you do. I think Wolves are in pole position now, there's no doubt about that. But with the games to go, it doesn't seem as if any team is going to win six or seven games. Wolves have got Birmingham and we've got Sheffield United and Birmingham - so there'll be games where we are slitting each others' throats.

But the way the Championship is at the moment, you look at the results and I think last weekend was one of the worst of all time in the Championship - I think there were five 0-0s. What's going on with the game? It's like a game of chess at the moment - it doesn't matter whether you're at the top or down at the bottom. There are so many sackings of managers these days you wonder whether managers don't want to lose games - so it's always about getting men behind the ball and trying to nick a goal.

But it's not great for spectators - you wouldn't be too happy watching it. But in the last couple of seasons that fear of losing has crept in - and it's the same in the Premier League. The money situation in the top division, teams can't afford to go down. Managers know that they'll pay with their jobs if they don't get results - and in the Championship there's such a fine line bewteen winning and losing that they tend to shut up shop and be defensive first. It's tough going. Hopefully we can start banging a few goals in and gear up for an exciting end to the season.
