Murts is Community Player of 2008
Graeme Murty has won the PFA Player in The Community Award at the 2009 Football League Awards incorporating FourFourTwo's Top 50 Football League Players.
Murty received the award at a gala dinner at Grosvenor House, Park Lane on Sunday evening in front of more than 800 attendees from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.
Murts, pictured with PFA Chairman Chris Powell, said, "There's not much recognition for players going into schools and working with youngsters, but it's important work that's making a contribution to children's lives.
"Seeing the sacrifices parents with special needs children make was one of the reasons I wanted my testimonial year to include charities, and if I'm doing this sort of work then hopefully other players will do the same."
The Royals' captain received the award as a result of the outstanding commitment he has shown to projects carried out in the Reading area. He regularly supports a whole range of local good causes, and is patron of 'Swings and Smiles' (www.swingsandsmiles.co.uk), a local charity seeking to build a recreational facility in West Berkshire for families who have special needs children.
The judging panel for the PFA Player in The Community Award commented that "Graeme's commitment to Club, community and charity initiatives does really set him apart.
"His enthusiasm over many years both on and off the pitch is a credit to the Club and the game in general. He is a true Captain at the heart of his community."
The number one spot in the FourFourTwo Top 50 Football League Players went to Wolverhampton Wanderers' striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, narrowly edging Kevin Doyle into second place.
Matt Fryatt of Leicester City was the highest ranked League 1 player and Grant Holt of Shrewsbury Town the best from League 2. The full list of The Top 50 Football League Players can be found either in the May issue of FourFourTwo which is on sale now, or on the FourFourTwo website www.fourfourtwo.com.
