The Royals reserves suffered their first defeat of the season with a 2-0 defeat against Charlton Athletic at Madejski Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
One positive to emerge from a disappointing game was the return of Liam Rosenior from a broken hand; the right back played the full 90 minutes.
After a minute's silence in tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, Reading started well and came close when Leroy Lita's cross led to Jacob Walcott's toe poked effort being scrambled off the line.
Adam Federici then made a good save from Chris Dickson before a Dan Harding corner was almost bundled home by first Abdulai Baggie and then Lita.
Lita went close again after 24 minutes with a low left-footed drive from 20 yards that the visiting keeper saved at full stretch.
Despite having all the play, the Royals fell behind on the half hour when Chris Dickson beat Federici from 12 yards out.
Before the interval Lita had a good right-footed drive blocked by a last gasp dive from an Addicks defender, and the striker then sent a lob onto the roof of the net.
Charlton doubled their lead early in the second half when Deon Burton produced a prodded close range finish after running onto a throughball from right winger Scott Wagstaff.
There were few chances for either team in a quiet second period, although it was nearly three for the visitors when Alex Stavrinou broke inside from the left and sent a fierce right footed drive against the crossbar, and Federici had to make a good save from a deflected strike by Liam Bellamy.
The closest Reading came to a goal in the second period was after 69 minutes when Baggie advanced down the right and cut back a low cross that was turned narrowly wide by Andrew White.
