Promotion & relegation permutations

Posted on: Mon 27 Apr 2009

Reading and Norwich go into a vital Coca-Cola Championship fixture this evening knowing the match will have a huge bearing on their futures in the division.

With the Royals looking for promotion and Norwich trying to avoid relegation, this is a vital game for both sides.

Reading must win to have any chance of automatic promotion. Second place is achievable if we win tonight and then went on to beat Birmingham on Sunday, while Sheffield United draw or lose away to Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace. We would therefore go up on goal difference.

A win for Reading tonight means that we would finish at least fourth at the end of the season. If we were to then end up in the play-offs, we would face either Cardiff, Burnley or Preston with the second leg at Madejski Stadium.

If we draw or lose, we could finish anywhere from fourth to sixth and our play-off opponents would come from the above three clubs, as well as Birmingham or Sheff Utd.

Norwich are currently in the relegation zone and know that a defeat tonight means their fate would be out of their hands.

If the Canaries are beaten tonight then they would remain three points behind Barnsley with one game to play, albeit with a superior goal difference. That being the case, if Barnsley get any kind of result at Plymouth on Sunday, Norwich would be down.

If Norwich pick up one point tonight, they would need to win at Charlton on Sunday and hope Barnsley fail to three points at Home Park, or Nottm Forest lose at home to Southampton.

If Norwich win tonight, they would just have to equal Barnsley's result in order to stay up.
