Coach delighted with youngsters
Coach Nigel Gibbs was delighted with the Royals' young players in our 4-0 reserve team win at Gillingham on Thursday afternoon.
Of our starting XI, only Julian Kelly had any first team experience, but we put the Gills to the sword with a top drawer performance.
Julian's younger brother Oliver scored on his reserves debut, while Jacob Walcott also got his first for our second string. Abdulai Baggie made it seven goals in nine games, while Andrew White got his second in a week.
Our reserves won the Totesport.com Combination League this week, and Gibbs said, "The young lads were terrific, right through from 1 to 11. We scored some good goals and deserved the win.
"Angus MacDonald is still a schoolboy but he played the full 90 at the back and was excellent in this his first game.
"Jacob Walcott got his first goal for the reserves and it came about after good play, he turned well and shot into the far corner through a crowd of bodies.
"We scored four good goals, in fact. The first one came about after great play by Jake Taylor on the left, he combined with Abdulai Baggie to allow Andrew White to score from six yards, it was a really good goal.
"The second one came about when Oliver Kelly did well to find White, he was fouled and Baggie bent the free kick over the wall.
"Baggie set up the third with a cross from the right, White got across his man and Oliver Kelly got on the bits and pieces to slide it in.
"Then Walcott made it 4-0 of course. It was good for him to get his first goal, White got his second in two games and they all did well.
"James Rowe is normally a midfielder but played right back and did well so as I say from one to eleven they can be pleased."
