'High-level interest' in manager's role

Posted on: Thu 21 May 2009

Chief Executive Nigel Howe says there has been interest in the vacant manager's job from the very highest level.

The search for our next boss is well underway, and Nigel told our online TV station Reading World, "There's interest in Reading Football Club from the very highest level.

"We are perceived as a top-level club with good ideas and therefore we have had a lot of good interest.

"There's a wider variety of interest this time than when we appointed Steve Coppell, and by that I mean it's not just British applicants but foreign as well.

"Nick Hammond and I are speaking daily. I don't think the list of names is growing any more, it's a case of filtering it down into a number of candidates who can be interviewed.

"We are talking to who we can and finding out their ideas as a first port of call. I hope next week we'll start interviewing.

"I think this is the fifth time I've gone through this process. Within 24 hours we'd had plenty of applications, some of which I'd seen when we appointed Coppell and plenty of new faces as well of course.

"Steve's departure gives us the opportunity to go with a fresh face and fresh ideas."

Part one of a wide-ranging video interview with Nigel is now live on our online TV station Reading World - see our free preview clip. There is much more to follow next week - sign up to World until 20th August for only £4.99.
