Church makes Wales debut

Posted on: Mon 01 Jun 2009

Young Reading striker Simon Church made his debut for Wales as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Estonia on Friday.

The 20-year-old played the final 30 minutes at Llanelli, and actually had the ball in the net within seconds of coming on - only to be harshly booked for carrying on playing after the referee's whistle had blown for an infringement.

Church was one of three teenagers who made their debuts, and boss John Toshack said, "All three did well when they came on, and I was particularly pleased with Church who showed a lot of skill and effort in the time he had."

Simon could now start in Saturday's World Cup qualifier in Azerbaijan if Manchester City's Ched Evans does not recover from a back problem.
