Blow to midfielder's hopes

Posted on: Mon 08 Jun 2009

Brynjar Gunnarsson's hopes of making the World Cup in South Africa next summer took a blow on Saturday.

Gunnarsson's Iceland hosted Holland, but the visitors took a 2-1 win and thereby became the first European team to secure passage to the tournament next summer.

Brynjar started on the bench, and was forced to watch his team go 2-0 behind as Nigel De Jong and Mark Van Bommel notched.

Gunnarsson, 33, was summoned to come on at half time, and helped his team pull a goal back late on but it was too little too late.

A number of Reading supporters saw this action for themselves by watching online for free at Bet365.

Iceland play Macedonia in another friendly game this Wednesday and the match is again live on Bet365 - kick off 4:45pm UK time.

Gunnarsson is out of contract at Madejski Stadium this summer but has been offered a new deal to stay with the Royals.
