Royals Chairman Sir John Madejski spoke to our official radio station Reading 107 recently, and expressed his excitement at the new era ahead for Reading FC.
How did you find the process of appointing Brendan?
Like always, we did it the proper way, we went straight through the front door and spoke to Watford's Chairman, who reluctantly agreed for Brendan to come here and join us. Nick Hammond did an incredible job.
We got our man, which is very exciting and at interview Brendan was head and shoulders above everybody else. With the experience he gained by leaving Reading and going to Chelsea, then having several months as first team manager at Waford, doing so well, we had to get him back.
It wasn't the cheapest option I have to tell you, because we paid a large compensation but we do believe we've certainly got the best person for Reading Football Club at this moment in history.
How do you think Brendan will be received by the supporters here at Reading?
I think he's going to go down incredibly well because he's a Reading man after all. He's been in Reading for 20 years and has great affinity with the town. It's a new era, an exciting new era. He comes with a fresh approach and new ideas. He has honed his approach, not just with Reading but by going to one of the biggest clubs in the land under the wing of Jose Mourinho, who, whatever you feel about him, knows his stuff. To come back with that pedigree, and has Brendan has said, to be able to inspire players from the age of 5 up until the end of their career is pretty unusual.
I think we've got the consumate manager and you'll never get anybody more dedicated, keen and anxious with more enthusiasm to take Reading forward. It was a no-brainer to get him here, we're just very, very lucky.
What are you most looking forward to ahead of the new season?
Well what I would like to say to anyone out there, if you're a football fan or not, I think Reading Football Club represents the whole of Reading. I'd like to see more people coming to the stadium, I'd like to see everybody enjoying what we put on the park because I know Brendan is going to play an exciting form of football that will be most entertaining.
I just urge people to come down, renew their season tickets if they haven't already done so and those that come to Reading Football Club will have a most entertaining season. It's a community club, for the people by the people and the fans make all the difference in the world.
This is a new era and I would like everyone to be involved.
