Kevin says farewell to our fans
Kevin Doyle admits his four years at Reading was the best time of his life, as well as his footballing career.
The striker has today joined Wolves for a fee that represents a Club record for the Royals, and the Irishman wanted to give his best wishes to our supporters.
Kevin spoke to the official website just before 11pm on Monday evening, and even in his last moments as a Reading player he was keen to go out of his way to speak to the fans who had given him such great backing.
He told readingfc.co.uk, "It's sad, to be totally honest. I've had the best four years of my career at Reading and the best four years of my life. It was the best time ever, not just for myself but for my girlfriend and my family as well, we've come over from Ireland and been treated so well.
"It was a tough decision to leave, and my feelings for the Club are probably why I've been here for four years. For my career now I had to play in the Premiership and Wolves are a Club that is a lot like Reading in many ways.
"It's been a tough few weeks for me in terms of deciding what to do and it's been a headache. To be fair to the Chairman and especially Nick Hammond, for as long as I have been here they have always been very good to me and saying how much they want me to stay and do well.
"If I hadn't moved now I would have been happy because it's exciting times for Reading. There's a new manager in place and on top of that Eamonn Dolan has a lot of kids coming through. It's a new era now and Reading will be successful again with the structure they have in place and how well it is run. There are only good things ahead.
"With one of the youngest squads and the youngest manager I was excited about the season, to be honest! The last time I was at Hogwood I was speaking to Jon Fearn about what was happening and it's exciting! I'll quickly be forgotten when a couple of new signings come in and it will be onwards and upwards again.
"I've only ever had good relations with the fans. I think we've enjoyed each other's company and it's been great. It's been easy for us both, especially when the team was doing so well, but even when things have not been so good they've been 100% behind both me and the Club. Look at when we came down and they wanted Steve Coppell to stay, that shows their mentality. On top of that I would also like to say that Steve was a massive influence on my career after bringing me over here.
"I was in the Wolves trophy room at the weekend and I saw the Championship trophy with our name on it. It made me think about that season and how it was just a dream. It will be hard for anyone to match that. The second season was close but that first one was just amazing.
"I just hope the fans appreciate that I tried my best. It wasn't always the best end result, I had my ups and downs - but thankfully I guess more ups than downs! I've played my best football at Reading, I scored goals and I just wish I'd scored more - we should never have been relegated and should have gone up last year as well.
"I appreciate all their support and I just hope they appreciate that I tried to play well and give my all."
