Rodgers: We played very well

Posted on: Sat 01 Aug 2009

New boss Brendan Rodgers was very pleased with his team's performance in our 2-2 friendly draw with Chelsea.

The Royals were 2-0 up with five minutes to go, and although the Premier League side clawed back a draw, a crowd of almost 19,000 went home from the game very impressed with Rodgers' side.

Brendan said, "I was really pleased, we did terrifically well. We played well and are getting better all the time.

"We will learn about tactically closing out games, but I really enjoyed the match - obviously more so at 2-0 than 2-2. It was a great exercise, Chelsea are a world class side. They have an elite mentality.

"The players put in a lot of effort. It was a terrific day and yes it's disappointing to draw when it ends 2-2, having been ahead against a world class team with five minutes to go."

Reading employed Brendan's preferred 4-3-3 formation, and we looked comfortable against world class opposition.

"I like players that are good with the ball, but also players who are good tactically. That has been our adaptation for the past few weeks, to understand the game.

"We will be better again next week, and I am really looking forward to the season.

"The boys have had three games in one week, but we have got players here who are different class. This bunch will never be out of a game.

"I was really pleased and it's nice to put on a good performance against players of that stature.

"The crowd appreciated how we tried to play, which was good."

Scott Davies scored our second with a well-taken free kick past Petr Cech, and the young midfield man put in a good display.

Brendan said, "His progress has been first class, he's scored goals in the last couple years. You want players to come through and you could see a few young players did exceptionally well."
