Royals midfielder Scott Davies says he is not getting carried away about securing a regular first team spot, despite his impressive performance in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Chelsea.
The 21-year-old played 65 minutes of Reading's final pre-season game and capped his day with a sublime goal from a free kick to gave his side a 2-0 half-time lead.
Yet despite this good showing, Davies - who was a late addition to the team after Marek Matejovsky failed to see off a groin injury - is keeping his feet firmly on the floor.
"Marek is a great player and he was unfortunate to be injured today, but I got my chance and obviously got a goal, which won't do me any harm.
"He is an established international and I'm not under any false illusions - the manager picks the team - but hopefully, come Friday, I'll have a sniff."
Despite the challenge he faces to get a regular place in the side, the Irish youth player - who aspires to be like the man he went toe-to-toe with at the weekend; Frank Lampard - will be buoyed by the comments that manager Brendan Rodgers made about his performance against one of the country's elite sides.
The boss said, "He's a terrific talent; he's a boy who has come through the system and had to go on loan to get experience, but he's a goal scoring midfielder and he's dangerous when he makes his forward runs.
"He has a belief that he will score a goal - he's very young - but has tremendous potential and has done very well."
As well as getting a crack at the first team this season, Davies would also like to see the Royals step things up at home when the new campaign gets underway on Saturday against Nottingham Forrest.
"Obviously being at the Madejski, it's nice to start at home for the new campaign and we want to make it a fortress.
"We spoke about it last week in training; last year's home form - towards the end of the season - the lads were saying it wasn't good enough, so hopefully we can kick on this season and get a good result at the weekend."
Full video highlights from the game will be on the all-new Reading FC Player very soon.
