Reading have completed the signing of central defender Matthew Mills from Doncaster Rovers.

The 23-year-old former England under 21 international has signed a three-year contract at Madejski Stadium and the Royals have paid an undisclosed seven-figure fee to secure his services.

Chairman Sir John Madejski said, "I would like to welcome Matthew to Reading and I am absolutely delighted that he has joined. We have been tracking him for a considerable amount of time and we believe he is one of the very best players of his type.

"This acquisition shows our determination to get back into the Premier League. I am delighted with how we are shaping up and it will be an exciting season for all supporters. A lot of hard work has gone into this signing and I would like to congratulate everybody involved in making it happen."

Director of Football Nick Hammond said, "Matthew is the right type of player for our club; he is young and hungry, but at the same time he has already gained very good experience in his career. He is a talented player and most importantly, with all the interest in him, he has shown enormous desire to join Reading Football Club."

Manager Brendan Rodgers said, "Matthew is a well-coveted player; a player that a number of clubs were looking at - and he senses that his development will be best suited here.

"He's the type of centre half I like, first and foremost I like them to defend, but I like centre halves that can be with a ball. He's a player that doesn't get rid of the ball, he passes it and he is that type I like. He fits the mould really well for where we're trying to go as a club in the next couple of years."

Matthew takes the squad number 5 and will train with his new teammates for the first time on Thursday.

A full video interview with Matthew is now live on the all-new Reading FC Player.
