Ivar announced as new captain
Posted on: Fri 07 Aug 2009
The Royals are pleased to announce that Ivar Ingimarsson has been appointed club captain by new manager Brendan Rodgers. The 31-year-old Iceland international defender will be assisted by new vice captain Alex Pearce, 21.
Ingimarsson is one of the most senior professionals within our squad, and Brendan has given him the honour of leading our team in this new era. Ivar joined the Royals from Wolves in October 2003, and has played 232(+4) games in a Reading shirt, scoring 12 goals. He has already worn the captain's armband on numerous occasions and now takes the role in a full-time capacity.
Fellow centre back Pearce is a product of our Academy and it was Rodgers who first brought him to Reading as a schoolboy. He has progressed steadily to go on to play for Scotland's under 21s, and already has 59(+13) professional games under his belt, including loan spells at Bournemouth, Norwich, Northampton and Southampton.
Speaking in his first ever programme notes in this Saturday's edition of The Royal, Brendan said, "Ivar has great respect from everybody here and his communication is open. He is ruthlessly simple, he says it as it is. I know he can put my message across when I am not there.
"In terms of Alex, I know that over time he can progress into a natural captain and he can learn from guys like Ivar. I want to help Alex in his progress because he is a natural leader of this club. He will learn as vice captain and be mentored to become captain one day."
Brendan informed the squad of his decision at a team meeting after training at Hogwood on Thursday afternoon. Everybody at the club would like to wish both Ivar and Alex success and good luck in their new roles.
